Viking Longboat was six months in making

Sunderland Echo - - The Tall Ships Races 2018 Are Here -

A 15ft Viking longboat was ‘launched’ as part of Tall Ships Sunderland.

It has been built at St Mark’s Church, Millfield, as part of the Cultural Spring’s Set the Sails project.

Seven community groups, including one school, across the city created model ships or made maritime-themed art to welcome the Tall Ships.

The groups are Box Youth Project; Fencehouses YMCA Learning Difficulties and Disability (LDD) Group; Fulwell Junior School; Hopewood Park; Sangini Art Group at CHANCE; St Mark’s Church, Millfield; and Thornhill Academy and Young Asian Voices.

The Viking longboat project at St Mark’s was led by artist Chris Folwell. It formed part of the Tall Ships Welcome Parade on Wednesday evening.

Separate teams have made the ship’s colourful sail and the impressive lion masthead, based on images of the legendary lion of St Mark.

The group had been working on the ship at weekly workshops for more than six months.
