‘Ditch the car’ plea fell on deaf ears

Sunderland Echo - - Retro -

A plea for Wearsiders to leave their cars at home and let buses and trains take the strain seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

All single fares on buses and Regional Railways in Tyne and Wear were knocked down to just 20p for the first car-free day.

The one-off day was organised as part of the Don’t Choke Britain campaign.

Transport chiefs had hoped it would have resulted in people flocking onto the trains and buses across Wearside. But in Sunderland the picture looked the same as any other Sunday. The central bus station and the railway station platforms were largely deserted. There was no sign of hordes of residents having locked up their cars for the day so that they could climb aboard public transport.
