Pupils urged to take the biscuit

-

Youngsters are being urged to put on their thinking caps because a Sunderland bear is on the hunt for lots of biscuits.

Benedict Bear, the mascot for St Benedict’s Hospice, is on the hunt for primary school aged children in the city to create him a tasty new treat – and help raise cash for the charity.

Schools and children’s organisations from Sunderland and the surrounding areas have been invited to take part in this new competition hosted by the Ryhope hospice.

It is hoped the final winning biscuits can then be re-produced and sold across the hospice shops in the area, boosting funds for the work it does.

The competition has been devised to hopefully raise more awareness of the hospice in the area especially amongst the younger generation.

It is also focussing on encouraging creativity and enjoyment for the children involved who will be tasked to come up with some amazing flavours, designs and decorations.

So far more than 1,000 children have been signed up to take part from schools and community groups such as St Patrick’s RC School, Redby Academy, Hylton Castle Primary, Northern Saints CE Primary School, Grindon Infant School and St Joe’s Brownies.

Children have been asked to submit an initial design that will be shortlisted by the hospice’s head chef, Wayne Forrester, following the closing date of March 22.

Finalists will then be invited along to the hospice to present their designs to a judging panel on Friday, April 5.

The winner will receive a large Easter hamper and the privilege of having their biscuit reproduced and sold in Sunderland for a limited time only.

Lisa Peverley, Community Fundraiser at St Benedict’s Hospice who is co-ordinating the biscuit bake, said: “We are really excited about this competition and the opportunity to work with primary schools in our area.

“It is a really great way of engaging our community and spreading much needed awareness of our local hospice.

“I can’t wait to see the design submissions and meet with the children involved.”

Anyone who runs an organistion who would like to know more about the competition and how they can enter should contact Lisa Peverley direct by email at lisa.peverley@stft.nhs.uk, or telephone her on 0191 512 8436.
