Errol Flynn, Monaco, 1950.
A dapper Errol Flynn pauses as he disembarks from his 36-metre Zaca on the way to marry the third Mrs Flynn, Patrice Wymore. The couples’ reception at the Empire Room in the Hotel de Paris involved a cake weighing 77lb. Weeks earlier, he’d been engaged to Princess Ghica of Romania; he’d had his housekeeper phone her with the news of his change of fiancée. Despite an attempt at domesticity, the marriage was always troubled. Wymore died in 2014 in Jamaica on the estate she’d fleetingly shared with Flynn. Flynn died in 1959, aged 50, with what his doctor said was the body of a 70-year-old, but with his last companion, the 17-year-old startlet Beverley Aadland. The wooden Zaca hails from 1930, and sails today in private hands.
