The launch of Tommy Sopwith’s splendid all-steel 39-metre J Class Endeavour, the 1934 challenger for the America’s Cup, at the Camper & Nicholson yard in Gosport, Hampshire. “I name you Endeavour, and with all my heart I wish you a cupful of luck,” said his wife at the launch, but it was an ill-starred attempt, with a crew strike on the eve of departure resulting in predominantly amateurs on board. With two initial wins over Velsheda, the yacht then lost the last four races in controversial circumstances. Inducted into the America’s Cup Hall of Fame in 1988, Sopwith died aged 101 in 1989. The 83-year-old Endeavour will be competing in the America’s Cup J Class regatta in June, and is on brokerage with Edmiston, asking €17.5 million.
