Work, work, work! How I did it…
Name: Katrien Kegels
Hometown: Raposeira, Algarve Portugal
Job Title: Manager & Founder of Chicks On Waves.
CV: I’ve done dozens of jobs from working in a
surf camp as a breakfast girl to working in a
call centre in Holland. After my studies I worked
in a marketing communications company, and after
that I did winter seasons in the snow working as
a ski instructor and in a snowboard shop. Between
seasons I travelled the world looking for waves.
How I did it?
I organised my first Chicks On
Waves retreat eight years ago. When it turned
out to be a success I started organising a few
camps a year, alongside my other jobs. Year
on year I would run more camps because of the
rising demand from girls wanting to learn to
surf. I guess starting slowly helped me to grow
without taking big risks. I’ve always kept doing
other jobs on the side until Chicks On Waves
paid enough to live from.

Beach style Relaxed easy wear; whatever is comfortable in and out the water.
A typical working week consists of? My job
is very versatile. On one hand I have an office
administration job that consists of answering
emails, processing bookings, paying bills and
organising work schedules. I create the daily
schedule for the guests: yoga classes, surf
pick-ups, food and any little extras. Then I
also take care of the social media, taking and
sorting pictures, updating the website and advertising. I try to welcome all new guests upon
arrival, show them around and every week I join
a dinner out with the guests – this gives me
the time to get to know the girls. I also have
a host, who is around for the girls throughout
the week and helps with making the breakfast and
Best part of my job: Being surrounded by
people in the happy holiday mood and getting
inspired by so many stories of strong women.
Worst part: Seeing everyone surf and wanting
to surf with them.
After work: I am a busy mum of two small
boys and I try to spend as much time with them
