Merrow fall short in nailbiting finale
MERROW met Albury in the final of the Harding Cup at Puttenham and Wanborough BC.
The village competition requires each entrant to field two triples teams, including at least one female bowler.
The final was played on a fast green with little opportunity for bowls to turn.
Several members turned up to support Merrow and they were rewarded with a thrilling match.
With one end to play on one of the two rinks, Merrow needed three points to win, or two to draw and force a play-off.
But a Merrow team of Debbie and David Ewins, David Matthews, Judy and Bob Carey and Tony Cekys could only make one point, meaning Albury won by the same margin. Merrow 70 Shere 30 Rink 1: M Hosking, D Raison and C Mitchell beat G Smith, C Kensit and R Etherington 17-11. Rink 2: J Carey, A Mead and D Ewins beat J Cross, D Burge and E Kirk 24-14. Rink 3: J Mead, K Burburry and B Carey beat M Jones, J Parker and J Durrant 29-5.
