HERSHAM villagers came together to celebrate Christmas at the annual lights switch-on. The Hersham Residents’ Association co-ordinated the event on Saturday, when Elmbridge mayor Barry Fairbank switched on the festive lights display assisted by Father Christmas. The Promenade Choir warmed things up at Hersham Green shopping centre earlier in the afternoon and led carols around the Christmas tree on the green, which had been decorated by children from Bell Farm and schools. The Waterman’s Arms served mince pies and mulled wine and hamper was raffled for the mayor’s charity. Association chairman David Lock said: “It was a successful event. “The local councillors did a lot to help this year and drummed up lots of support from businesses.” There were also carols from Churches Together in Hersham in the morning, and a children’s shopping quiz, which will continue until January 6.
