Surrey stars light up national champs
A HOST of Surrey athletes made a great impact at the South of England Inter County Cross-Country Championships in Oxford. As part of a hugely impressive squad, local boys Joshua Foreman (Salesian School) and Joshua Genco-Russo (St John the Baptist) gained gold team medals in the U13 boys event. Foreman was 13th and Josh Genco-Russo 20th, the third and fourth scorers in a superb boys team who were well ahead of a strong Buckinghamshire outfit. In fact, three of the four scorers are all members of the strongest cross country club in the UK, Aldershot Farnham & District (AFD). In the U15 boys race, Ollie Percival (Rydens) was the first Surrey runner home in 15th place, with the team just missing out on team medals in fourth place. He was joined in the U15 team by Heathside pupil, Marcus Shantry, in 38th place. Another medal was to follow in the U15 girls event, with Eugenie Cockle (Fullbrook) in fifth place, the second Surrey runner home in the gold medal winning team. Evie Higton (SJB) just missed out on a gold team medal, her 34th place meaning she was the fifth Surrey runner home, headed by two of her clubmates from AFD. The team’s coach, Trevor Raggett, the North West Surrey schools team manager, is now busy preparing them for their next big race, the Surrey County AA Championships in Croydon next month.
