Alex Davies has over 25 years experience as a sculptor, foundryman and blacksmith, and in 2001 he founded Milwyn Fine Art Casting Foundry
Cast in bronze
The lowdown Milwyn Casting is a specialist bronze casting foundry based at Highlands Farm in Leatherhead and works with artists to create impressive bronze sculptures. Alex and the team at Milwyn use a 2,000-year-old technique called “the lost wax method” as well as modern technology, such as 3D printing, to help artists achieve their visions.
The company has just started work on its largest bronze sculpture to date. The 6.5-metrehigh, four-ton creation is by artist Maurice Blik and is due to be installed on a building in Cyprus once work in Surrey is complete.
Milwyn also recently teamed up with the Royal Academy and Royal Society of Sculptures to offer one lucky student a residency at the foundry and £3,000 for casting costs, thus helping to ensure that the foundry’s skills are passed on to another generation.
