MEET THE ARTIST
Julia Hawkins, a Latvian artist who loves to paint en plein air, is ideally placed at her home near Leatherhead to explore the Surrey countryside on her doorstep.
“When you live in such a beautiful area as I do, the stunning places and the views just beg to be painted,” she says. “I live near Box Hill, a place with a very special air about it. Sometimes I think it is like Mount Fuji, with the ever changing clouds that surround it. I love to watch the different moods created by the weather and plan to paint the view in the various climate conditions over the next year or so.”
Julia originally trained as an illustrator, a skill she finds valuable in planning her paintings. She started working in oils eight years ago and joined the Dorking Group of Artists (DGA) and Leatherhead Art Club. With their support she developed her own, beautifully fluid style of painting, and was recently accepted as an Associate of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
