SADDLERS B& B Funtingdon Milly Boxley, owner 01243 575029; www.sad

“We were absolutely thrilled and very honoured to be shortlisted in such a competitive category. It is a real valediction of all the months of planning and rebuilding that went into turning an old, neglected saddler’s shop into a welcoming home from home for our guests. We already partner with major Sussex sporting event organisers and an endorsement from your prestigious magazine further enhances our reputation with local businesses. We love our guests and our guests love us. Our aim was to design boutique hotel-style rooms within the welcoming atmosphere of a family home. We use locally sourced farm produce for our renowned cooked breakfasts. We receive glowing testimonials and after a year’s trading we have regular repeat guests, several from overseas. Saddlers is in a prime location for guests to explore all that Sussex has to offer and via social media we give regular updates about life at Saddlers and upcoming local events.”

THE GREAT BRITISH PORRIDGE CO Ferring Jacqueline Barleycorn, grain surgeon 07928 108184; www.thegreatbritishpor

“I love Sussex, life in this beautiful county has inspired me launch my own very successful business The Great British Porridge Co which is a 100 per cent natural porridge jam-packed full of ingredients from Mother Nature’s store cupboard. I have put my heart and soul into this business, it has completely taken over my life. I love living in Sussex, its vibe and beauty inspires me. So to be a finalist in the Celebration of Sussex Life Awards is just incredible and recognition of what I have achieved in such a short time with the help, support and understanding of my amazing family. Building up a company from scratch with no previous experience in only eight months and to be on the shelves of 150 retailers including Harvey Nichols and Selfridges, plus selling in three other countries is something I am tremendously proud of. To win this award would indeed be such an honour and a privilege.”

HARLEY HOUSE DISTILLERY Seaford Adam Cowley, creative and magical distiller 01323 491998; www.harleyhousedis

“We are absolutely delighted to be a finalist in the Best Newcomer category. Having launched Harley House Distillery on 30 September 2017 with our Pure Sussex Gin, we have grown to have a substantial share of the extremely popular Sussex gin market. We pride ourselves on being one of the handful of distilleries in the UK actually making spirits in their entirety including the base spirit which we produce using British sugar and water extracted just three miles from our distillery here in Sussex. All of our ingredients are sustainably sourced from Sussex companies wherever possible. We truly are Pure Sussex.”
