Tameside Advertiser - - MANCHESTER MATTERS -

Charlotte Cox E’s the brightest talent ever to emerge as MasterChef champion – and he plans to hone his homegrown skills by opening a Manchester restaurant.

simon Wood, 38, became the first northerner to be awarded the accolade by judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace.

And the dad-of-four from Chadderton, is now sizzling hot property – mobbed in the street, captured in selfies, gaining 10,000 Twitter followers, 9,000 Facebook friend requests and countless messages of support.

But throughout the emotional experience, he’s kept his feet on the ground and his goal remains crystal clear.

He said: “I would like to stay in Manchester. If I could open a restaurant anywhere it would be in the city centre. There are loads of things I’d like to look at doing but I know I want to cook and I want a restaurant – that’s my main focus. I’d like it to be in the city centre, I think it would be more accessible for people from different areas.

“I want to provide people with something they can enjoy, somewhere refined but for everyone, an affordable treat.”

Although he found out he’d won in January, he was sworn to secrecy from even his closest family and friends.

simon, who started out flipping burgers at McDonald’s added: “I couldn’t tell anyone. so it was amazing to sit down and watch it with my family, friends and colleagues.”
