Mairi performs Whisky Galore! theme song
One of Scotland’s best known Gaelic singers, Mairi MacInnes, performs the theme tune to the hit summer film remake of Whisky Galore!.
Mairi lived on Arran for 23 years and was instrumental in establishing Fèis Arrain 19 years ago and was delighted to be back teaching Gaelic song at the fèis this summer.
Mairi’s most recent performance was at the On the Rocks festival on Eriskay inspired by the remake of Compton MacKenzie’s Whisky Galore! movie which features Mairi performing the title song Gairm na h-oidhche’(Calling the night).
South Uist-born and -bred Mairi, one of the youngest Mòd gold medallists, possesses the uncanny ability to connect with her audiences on a uniquely personal emotional level. These mesmerising performances make her one of Scotland’s premier vocalists and creator of the Gaelic Women CD collection. She appears regularly on national television and radio.
Mairi has collaborated with artists such as Runrig, Phil Cunningham, Barbara Dickson, William Jackson, Tony McManus, Llangwm Male Welsh Choir, BBC Orchestras, and sang in the Celtic Connections production Far, Far, From Ypres to great acclaim. Mairi will be taking to the high road with the full cast in 2018.
Director Gillies McKinnon has brought the true story of the cargo ship SS Politician, which ran aground off the coast of Eriskay in 1941 releasing its cargo of whisky, back to the big screen.
The music from the film is available on an album, produced by Patrick Doyle and Maggie Rodford, featuring an array of Scotland’s finest musicians, including Christopher Stout on the fiddle and Jarlath Henderson on the uilean pipes. Mairi’s original song Gairm na h-Oidche was composed for the film. Abigail Doyle wrote the lyrics for the song and the Gaelic translation was by Iain S MacPherson. The score was recorded and mixed at Air-Edel Recording Studios in London by Nick Taylor, who also mastered the soundtrack album.
Patrick said: ‘It was a pleasure to be asked by Gillies MacKinnon and the producers to compose the score for Whisky Galore!. It was another great opportunity to work with some of the finest Celtic folk instrumentalists in Scotland. I had worked previously with our key soloists on Pixar’s Brave (Christopher Stout, Jim Sutherland, Jarlath Henderson, Matheu Watson and Lorne MacDougal), but this was my first time working with the wonderful, Scottish Gaelic singer Mairi MacInnes. Mairi sings the song Gairm na h-Oidhche, for which my daughter Abigail penned the lyrics.
‘The song is featured in the beautiful, mystical night sequence, shot by Nigel Willoughby, as the islanders’ row out to steal the whisky from the wreck of the SS Cabinet Minister.
‘This score was a very personal one in many ways.
‘It was an opportunity to work on the adaptation of a quintessentially Scottish story, which captures the country’s stunning landscape on film.
‘I am also great friends with many of the outstanding Scottish actors in the cast.’
The album is available on CD and for streaming and download across all major platforms including iTunes, Amazon and Spotify. The Whisky Galore! DVD will be released in November.
