Great to see an island institution celebrating 40 years in business.
Arran Dairies is one of the oldest family firms on the island, with the business now run by its fourth generation.
Many visitors will only know them for their icecream but it is also Arran’s only locally-based catering wholesaler serving the island. Add the Taste of Arran work that goes on at the dairy’s base in Market Road and you get some idea of the thriving business hub it is today.
It may be a far cry from the dairy set up in 1978 by Russell and Sheila Dobson to process the milk produced on their Brodick farm but, as their son Alastair has said, if it wasn’t for their vision, the firm would not be what it is today.
Four years ago, it was sad to see the dairy stop producing milk due to increasingly difficult market conditions, but it has proved the right one and the company now concentrates on producing its awardwinning ice-cream, which has just been given a complete rebranding.
Arran Dairies may now be a real family affair, but Alastair was quick to praise the ‘small, diligent and fantastic team’ he has around him. That must all bode well for the next 40 years.
