The campaign to make Arran the first ‘no cold caller’ island in Scotland is to be applauded.
Anything which helps deter unwanted, nuisance or fraudulent callers trying to prey on, particularly, the elderly should be promoted and encouraged.
And to say that the whole island is a no cold caller zone sends out a pretty strong message and everyone who puts their name on the petition, set up by Liz Rose, is making that more of a reality.
Of course any scheme has to have the backing of Trading Standards, Police Scotland and a range of partners and it is good to see that they are on board.
Making it quite clear these people are not welcome here from when they step on to the ferry, drive into a village or knock on anyone’s door with the warning sticker cannot say: ‘I didn’t know’ when they face a criminal charge.
But the authorities can only do so much. It is up to all of us to be vigilant and to look out for any elderly or infirm neighbours from these unscrupulous individuals who, without soul or conscious, see them as a soft touch.
So let’s back the ‘no cold caller’ campaign and make the island a safer place for all of us.
