Corrie Film Club presents ...
Oh! What a Lovely War
Appropriately, to mark the centenary of the armistice of the First World War, Corrie Film Club is screening Richard Attenborough’s star–studded film, Oh! What a Lovely War.
Released in 1969 the comedy musical features Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson, John Mills, John Gielgud, Maggie Smith, Vanessa Redgrave, Ian Holm and Dirk Bogarde.
The film, based on Joan Littlewood’s stage musical of the same name, is a savage, satirical sideswipe at the mismanagement and waste of life seen in this tragic and horrible war.
It follows the Smith family from their optimistic jingoistic joining up to the sombre, disillusioned reality of a war of attrition.
It is a film of conflicting emotions using moving examples like Christmas 1914 juxtaposed with bawdy music hall songs.
There is pathos, satire, music and humour.
Above all, the abilities of great actors together create a picture of a devastating war with the deepest impact of the film coming from the sad realisation that there have been, and are, wars even more horrible.
Everyone is welcome to go and view this film at Corrie and Sannox Village Hall tomorrow (Armistice Sunday) at 8pm.
