Summer call-up for US could rule Toon’s Yedlin out for start of new season of new season
DEANDRE Yedlin could be touch and go to start the season with Newcastle United due to international commitments. The rightback is currently recovering from a thigh injury and is on course to play for the Magpies again this season.
However, the right-back is likely to be wanted by the United States to take part in this summer’s Gold Cup, which takes places at the same time as United’s pre-season preparations.
Yedlin played for the US in the last Gold Cup tournament in 2015 when the States reached the semi-finals and lost to Jamaica before losing a third-place play-off to Panama on penalties.
Newcastle return for pre-season training in early July at the same time the US kick off their Gold Cup campaign with games against Panama, Martinique and Nicaragua.
The States are hosting the competition, and with head coach Bruce Arena assessing Yedlin’s fitness two weeks ago in Los Angeles the right-back could be called up for the summer tournament.
Were the States to reach the final in Santa Clara, Yedlin could be unavailable until July 26.
He would then be entitled to a rest and recuperation period and left with little time to be ready for the start of the new season.
The Premier League season kicks off on August 12 while the EFL starts on August 6. US chief Arena spoke
of Yedlin’s injury recently and commented: “It is likely he will be out for about five weeks.
“I would expect he will be back on the field for Newcastle right at the end of this season in April.”
