WHEN Brendan Foster starts the Great North Run he will join an auspicious list - bar one - of celebrities, athletes and sports stars who have taken on the role.
Olympic athletes include Sir Mo Farah, Dame Kelly Holmes, Daley Thompson, Nicola Adams, Kat Copeland, Greg Rutherford, Sir Chris Hoy, Rebecca Adlington and Jonathan Edwards.
Paralympic athletes who have done so include Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson and Ellie Simmonds.
From the world of football there has been Sir Bobby Robson, Alan Shearer, Peter Beardsley, Sir Bobby Charlton, Jack Charlton and Peter Reid.
Formula One boss Frank Williams and England fast bowler Steve Harmison from Ashington have also started the race as have local music legends Mark Knopfler and Sting.
Meanwhile TV duo Ant and Dec have also done their bit as has TV commentator John Motson and former Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Last and very much least is disgraced late DJ Jimmy Savile.
