WHEN Bren­dan Foster starts the Great North Run he will join an aus­pi­cious list - bar one - of celebri­ties, ath­letes and sports stars who have taken on the role.

Olympic ath­letes in­clude Sir Mo Farah, Dame Kelly Holmes, Da­ley Thomp­son, Ni­cola Adams, Kat Copeland, Greg Ruther­ford, Sir Chris Hoy, Re­becca Adling­ton and Jonathan Ed­wards.

Par­a­lympic ath­letes who have done so in­clude Baroness Tanni Grey-Thomp­son and Ellie Sim­monds.

From the world of foot­ball there has been Sir Bobby Rob­son, Alan Shearer, Peter Beard­s­ley, Sir Bobby Charl­ton, Jack Charl­ton and Peter Reid.

For­mula One boss Frank Wil­liams and Eng­land fast bowler Steve Harmi­son from Ash­ing­ton have also started the race as have lo­cal music leg­ends Mark Knopfler and Sting.

Mean­while TV duo Ant and Dec have also done their bit as has TV com­men­ta­tor John Mot­son and for­mer Prime Min­is­ter Tony Blair.

Last and very much least is dis­graced late DJ Jimmy Sav­ile.
