Beardsley hails young Magpies after Trophy win

The Chronicle - - Nufc -

PETER Beardsley says he was pleased with Newcastle United’s maiden win in the Checkatrade Trophy at Crewe Alexandra.

The League Two side pushed United hard but went down 2-1 on a night in which Beardsley’s side created plenty of chances but still scraped a victory in the end.

After the game Beardsley, whose side won thanks to goals from Liam Smith and Luke Charman, said: “It was quite easy in the sense that we don’t always have to win. “Crewe were expected to win. “All the Under-21 teams in the competition have no pressure on them. “It’s a great thing for them. “We gave the ball away when we didn’t need to in the first half but we held out and got a good win.”

And Beardsley had plenty of respect for Crewe, he added: “They had seven of their first team playing from Saturday (in win over Port Vale).

“It’s credit to them and the competition but also credit to our kids.

“We’re trying to give them experience.

“They had to deal with long balls in the closing stages.”

United now face Port Vale and Oldham Athletic in the remaining games in Group D.
