Cottagers make £15m offer for Toon striker
NEWCASTLE United have received a bid for Dwight Gayle from Fulham worth £15m.
The £15m offer was tabled first thing yesterday morning by the Cottagers but United are yet to accept the offer – and the talk at St James’ Park is that Gayle is valued at a higher price.
Both Benitez and Gayle held talks at the club’s training ground this week, with the striker telling his boss he would like to stay on Tyneside.
Newcastle would not part company with Gayle unless they had a replacement lined up, with just hours now remaining in the summer transfer window.
And so far the only players that United have looked at for that position are loan deals, with Divock Origi of Liverpool interesting Benitez as well as Lucas Perez of Arsenal. However, Origi is wanted by a host of clubs, including Marseille and Juventus, while Perez’s wage demands of over £100,000 a week will prove complicated for Newcastle.
With the window not closing until 11pm tonight, United could hold out for a bigger fee for Gayle.
Benitez still wants a goalkeeper, a left-back and a creative midfielder with Newcastle trying to offload players in order to free up their budget and squad size.
