Life’s a beach for members of North gym
A FAMILY-RUN North Tyneside gym is taking to the beach on Saturday to raise vital funds for much-needed new equipment,
Unit 13 gym in Shiremoor opened its doors in February and has already proved a knockout success.
However, as the gym has continued to grow, so too does is need for new materials.
So members of the gym and its boxing club will set out to collectively run 200 miles on Tynemouth Longsands this weekend.
The gym’s owner Andrew Wile is hopeful of raising £1,500 from the sponsored run.
He believes that, while the funds are vital to the gym’s upkeep, it will also instill the comradery which is at the heart of the club.
He said: “The fundraiser will encourage teamwork within the club as well as improving members’ fitness.
“It will hopefully raise funds to go towards new equipment, including mats, gloves, bags and pads, to help improve the training facilities.”
The gym, which offers a Buggy Bootcamp class, prides itself on its family-friendly atmosphere.
Wile added: “Our boxing club is for kids as young as four years old up to our mixed-aged senior team.
“Everyone and their families are welcome to come along.
“Boxing is great fun and we teach fitness and discipline as well as building confidence and strength.
“We have created an environment for kids and adults of all abilities to train and focus, as well as keeping kids out of trouble.”
One of the gym’s junior boxing coaches Oliver Germaney says the gym is an easy-going environment with no egos and is looking forward to the weekend’s event.
He said: “It is a great place to train and teach.
“The fundraiser will boost team morale and provide new equipment for the club, which is important as we need to provide the correct equipment for our team to train to the best of their ability.”
