One-eyed Helena given the seal of approval

The Chronicle - - News -

CHEEKY and full of life, seal pup Helena has made a remarkable recovery after being found covered in fish hooks.

Although it might look like she’s winking at her kind rescuers, Helena has actually been left with just one eye due to her injuries.

The female pup, named after Helena Bonham Carter, was brought to the Blue Reef Aquarium in Tynemouth after a member of the public found her at the beginning of August and raised the alarm. She was discovered at St Mary’s Island in Whitley Bay with fishing hooks embedded in her skin from her head to her tail.

One of the hooks had caused an eye injury, resulting in an infection and an ulcer, and the eye had to be removed surgically.

Now, the three-month-old seal is starting to rebuild her strength before she is returned to the wild.
