Proof-texting?

The Church of England - - LETTERS -

Sir, Malachy Cornwell-Kelly asks why the Genesis passage isn’t the consequence of sin and Galatians the ‘get out of jail free’ card. This is because Adam names Eve - as woman - before the fall; to name someone is to have authority over them.

Meanwhile the Gal 3:28 passage must be interpreted in the light of the fact that elsewhere Paul continues to distinguish the treatment of men and women in the church - therefore it is absurd to suggest that this verse delegitimizes all his other comments on the issue. To do so is a crass piece of proof texting, the sort of thing that usually brings shame on us evangelicals. That liberals are resorting to it in this case goes to show how desperate they are. Bruce Patterson, Manchester
