Marriage the ideal

The Church of England - - THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND -

Sir, Jesus’ teaching on marriage, based on God’s plan in creation, remains the ideal: would that it were also the norm, as nowadays many dispense with marriage altogether.

Before Jesus died, however, he also told his disciples that he had more to teach them than they were then ready to receive. Having set a trajectory, he has left us to dot the ‘i’s and cross the ‘t’s, and since his time our understanding of human sexuality has become, rightly, more nuanced. Jesus promised, however, to leave us his Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth and this Spirit is not confined to the Church but blows where it wills.

Peter was taken aback by a ‘How can this be?’ moment at Joppa but then acted boldly, prompted by the Spirit. Few of us are granted a vision and so must needs exercise discernment, in community. We should all be able to identify with Thomas Mer ton’s words - ‘I cannot be sure that what I do at present pleases you, Lord... but I am sure that my desire to please you does please you.’ Serena Lancaster, Moreton-in-Marsh, Glos.
