Following the retirement of the Bishop of Guildford, the Rt Rev Christopher Hill, the post has been vacant since November. But a public meeting on Wednesday, forming part of a two-day fact-finding visit to the diocese by the Archbishops’ and the Prime Minister’s appointment secretaries looking for views on the needs of the diocese, hoped to build the desired profile of the new Bishop. A report from their visit will be fed back to the Crown Nominations Commission (CNC), which will meet twice this summer. An announcement of the successful candidate is expected early in 2015. Diocesan Secretary Stephen Marriott said: “The appointment of a Bishop is a huge event in the life of the diocese. We’re nearly 90 years old but there have only been nine Bishops of Guildford so far, so we only expect a vacancy about once in a decade.”
