Social action awards
Five Christian groups were recognized last week in the Christian Funders’ Forum awards.
Baby Basics, which supports new mothers struggling with financial and practical issues in dealing with new babies, won the top award. The Sheffield-based initiative was hailed for their work locally and their national impact. The judges said: “The charity has established a clear replicable model that helps other local churches to mobilise their congregation and wider community.”
Baby Basics work with midwives, health visitors and other professional groups to offer support directly where it is most needed. Volunteers also lovingly collect, sort and package a ‘Moses Basket’ of clothing, toiletries and essential baby equipment as an attractive gift to new mothers particularly those from displaced people groups or seeking asylum.
Matt Bird, Chair of the Christian Funders’ Forum and host of the ceremony said, “The projects highlight the growing impact that churches are having in their local areas, working together to make a real difference to so many.”
