So­cial ac­tion awards

Five Chris­tian groups were rec­og­nized last week in the Chris­tian Fun­ders’ Fo­rum awards.

Baby Ba­sics, which sup­ports new moth­ers strug­gling with fi­nan­cial and prac­ti­cal is­sues in deal­ing with new ba­bies, won the top award. The Sh­effield-based ini­tia­tive was hailed for their work lo­cally and their na­tional im­pact. The judges said: “The char­ity has es­tab­lished a clear repli­ca­ble model that helps other lo­cal churches to mo­bilise their con­gre­ga­tion and wider com­mu­nity.”

Baby Ba­sics work with mid­wives, health vis­i­tors and other pro­fes­sional groups to of­fer sup­port di­rectly where it is most needed. Vol­un­teers also lov­ingly col­lect, sort and pack­age a ‘Moses Bas­ket’ of cloth­ing, toi­letries and es­sen­tial baby equip­ment as an at­trac­tive gift to new moth­ers par­tic­u­larly those from dis­placed peo­ple groups or seek­ing asy­lum.

Matt Bird, Chair of the Chris­tian Fun­ders’ Fo­rum and host of the cer­e­mony said, “The projects high­light the grow­ing im­pact that churches are hav­ing in their lo­cal ar­eas, work­ing to­gether to make a real dif­fer­ence to so many.”
