Jaeger makes history with 58

-

Germany’s Stephan Jaeger made history by carding a 12-under-par 58 in the Ellie Mae Classic on the Web.com Tour, the PGA’s second tier.

Jaeger fired 12 birdies on the par-70 layout at TPC Stonebrae outside San Francisco to record the first 58 in a sanctioned event on the Web.com Tour, PGA Tour, European Tour or Champions Tour.

“I’m really happy with the way I played, especially on the back nine,” Jaeger said.

Jaeger began his round on the back nine and after a birdie on the 11th, carded five more in succession from the 13th to reach the turn in 29.

The 27-year-old then picked up shots on five of the first six holes on the front nine before holing from 10 feet on the ninth to make history.

“Obviously I feel good about my golf game and want to keep it going. I don’t want to lose that confidence,” added Jaeger, whose efforts gave him a fourshot lead.

“Obviously the expectations are going to be different tomorrow. You’re not going to be out there and shoot 58 again. It might be a day to grind a little bit. But that’s OK.”

Other examples of 58s in competition include Ryo Ishikawa on the Japan Tour in 2010, Shigeki Maruyama at a US Open sectional qualifier in 2000 and Jason Bohn on the Canadian Tour in 2001.

While Jaeger’s score was one of the best recorded in any professional event, it could have been even better after he threeputted the par-five third for par.
