Somewhat surprised
Willie Robertson of Lynton writes: “The recent anniversary of the Tay Road Bridge brought back memories of its opening day. As a 12-year-old lad, my elder brother and I decided that it would be a good wee trip.
“Off we went, me on my 14” Meteor cycle, along Riverside Drive, passing the long queue of cars waiting to make this first day crossing. When we did arrive in Fife it was decided that we should ‘phone home and announce our great feat to Mum and Dad, who knew nothing of our little adventure.
“However, that would have required cash for the ‘phone box so we indulged in a reversed charge call all the way from Fife! I can’t remember my parents’ reaction, but I suspect they would have been somewhat surprised.”
Eddie Mahoney has also written with some memories. “I was working as a apprentice joiner with Charles Gray builders at the construction of Dundee Dental Hospital in Park Place,” he says.
“After I finished work one evening, I decided that, instead of going straight home to Monifieth where I lived, I would cycle across the Tay Road Bridge and back.
“It was so memorable to me – yes, it was another two miles on my journey but, as I was cycling every day to and from my work, what was another two miles?”
