Foxes go top as ‘Dragon Slayer’ Slimani’s goal sees off Porto

-

LEICESTER 1 PORTO 0

Islam Slimani lived up to his nickname as gritty Leicester took control of Group G with a deserved 1-0 win over Porto last night.

Striker Slimani, labelled the Dragon Slayer after his run of goals against Porto, bagged his sixth goal of 2016 against them.

He had netted five in three games for previous club Sporting Lisbon against Porto before his £29 million deadline-day move to Leicester, and grabbed the winner against the Dragons as the Foxes hosted a Champions League game for the first time.

It left Leicester two points clear at the top of the table as they made it successive Champions League wins following their opening victory at Club Brugge.

Jesus Corona hit the post late on for Porto as the Foxes rode out late pressure and Copenhagen’s 4-0 win over Brugge allowed the pair breathing space over their beaten rivals.

Defeat also continued Porto’s wretched run of results in England and they have now failed to win in 17 attempts.

Porto, now third in the group with one point, offered little apart from their late rally and Claudio Ranieri’s side should be increasingly confident of reaching the knock-out stages.

In the other tie in Group G FC Copenhagen eased to a comfortable 4-0 victory over Club Brugge.

CSKA MOSCOW 0 TOTTENHAM 1

Tottenham’s Champions League campaign is up and running after Son Heung-min scored his fifth goal in as many games to snatch a 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow.

Spurs dominated possession in the newly-built CSKA Arena but struggled to break down their resilient opponents until Son struck in the 71st minute to seal an invaluable three points.

The victory lifts Mauricio Pochettino’s men up to second in Group E and only a point behind leaders Monaco, who drew 1-1 at home to Bayer Leverkusen.

Much of the talk in the build-up to this contest surrounded Harry Kane’s return from injury but Son has now scored three goals in the two matches since Kane was carried off on a stretcher and this was arguably his most important.

Tottenham sat bottom of the standings at kick-off following their disappointing opening defeat at home to Monaco and this result puts them back in the hunt for top spot, in a group that looks unlikely to produce a runaway victor.

Pochettino had little room for manoeuvre in his starting line-up given Kane, Danny Rose, Eric Dier, Mousa Dembele and Moussa Sissoko were all left at home to recover from injury, but there was one surprise as Kieran Trippier began ahead of Kyle Walker at right-back.

Monaco, who defeated Spurs in the opening game of the group, shared the spoils with Bayer Leverkusen in a 2-2 draw.

BORUSSIA DORTMUND 2 REAL MADRID 2

Andre Schurrle’s late equaliser ensured Borussia Dortmund claim a 2-2 draw against Group F rivals Real Madrid at the Westfalenstadion.

Ronaldo grabbed his 95th Champions League goal when his first-time effort beat Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki to give the visitors a 1-0 lead but PierreEmerick Aubameyang equalised just before half-time.

Raphael Varane restored Real’s advantage in the second half but substitute Schurrle’s late strike three minutes from time saw both sides share the spoils in an evenlycontested encounter.

Elsewhere last night, Sporting Lisbon beat Legia Warsaw 2-0 in the other Group F match, while in Group H Juventus thumped Dinamo Zagreb 4-0 and Sevilla saw off Lyon 1-0
