A possible solution to the problem of algal bloom which has beset Loch Leven is being pioneered at a fishery near Perth. Acting on the advice of the Aquatic Weed Research Unit, barley straw is being added to Sandyknowes, Bridge of Earn, with encouraging results. “It costs nothing to try and is environmentally friendly,” said Mr David Brien, of the fishery. Although not a major difficulty at the fishery, and not harmful to wildlife, the algal bloom detracts from its appearance.
