Losing weight saves money
Sir, – It is reported that everyone over 40 in England is to be given a blood test to identify if unhealthy eating has affected their metabolism.
If so they will be enrolled on healthy living programmes, including cookery lessons and exercise coaching.
They cost £435, less than a Baby Box (to be handed out to new parents across Scotland), but reduction in diabetes Type 2 cases is expected to be enormous.
Why can’t NHS Scotland do this?
Treating illness caused by obesity and diabetes costs £8.8bn in England, equivalent to £800m out of NHS Scotland’s £13bn budget.
We can all reduce pressure on the NHS by keeping ourselves healthy.
A study in the Lancet last year showed that patients could lose up to 21lbs if their doctor took 30 seconds to book them on to a Weight Watchers course. Allan Sutherland. 1 Willow Row, Stonehaven.
