Centenary of Russian studies is celebrated
Glasgow University is celebrating a century since it opened its Department of Russian Studies with a programme of Russian-themed events.
The 100th anniversary programme celebrates the trade links between Scotland and Russia. The first Russian class at the university was affected by the Russian Revolution which changed world history.
But Russia’s internal turmoil, the university says, had little impact on its newest department at that time because of the strength of the trading links between Scotland and Russia – links which underlay the foundation of Russian Studies.
The university’s Hunterian Museum will also host a virtual exhibition as part of the celebrations.
