The Courier & Advertiser (Angus and The Mearns Edition) - - COMMENT -

One of Arbroath’s best-known personalities, Mrs Betsy Swankie, 13 High Street, is to retire because of ill-health after a lifetime in the fish trade. She is 84. Mrs Swankie, who is principal of the firm of Swankie & Smith, was born at Old Shorehead, not far from the harbour. In her youth, along with other local girls, she would make the long trip to Perth to sell fish. There were no vans to help them with their country rounds. In fact, they were lucky to get a lift in a cart. The girls made many friends on their rounds.
