Re­trial over rape charge

A Com­mon­wealth Games swim­mer will face a re­trial af­ter a jury was un­able to reach a ver­dict on an al­le­ga­tion he raped a woman af­ter a night out.

Otto Put­land, 23, will face trial at Cardiff Crown Court in De­cem­ber ac­cused of one charge of rape, al­leged to have hap­pened in the city in July 2015.

The de­fen­dant, who rep­re­sented Wales at the 2014 Com­mon­wealth Games in Glas­gow, had de­nied the al­le­ga­tion dur­ing his trial say­ing he and the woman had con­sen­sual sex.

Janet McDon­ald, prose­cut­ing, said: “The court gave the Crown seven days to con­sider its po­si­tion. We are pro­ceed­ing to trial. “
