Doz­ing death crash driver jailed

A van driver was jailed for four years yes­ter­day af­ter killing a mo­torist when he fell asleep at the wheel and ploughed into sta­tion­ary traf­fic.

Ion Rusu mo­men­tar­ily dozed off be­fore col­lid­ing with a Honda Civic be­ing driven by Marek Ma­jew­ski which was shunted into the back of a lorry.

Farm worker Mr Ma­jew­ski, 25, died fol­low­ing the col­li­sion near the Keir round­about at Dun­blane on the south­bound A9 Perth to Glas­gow road and a pas­sen­ger in his car was in­jured.

Judge Gra­ham Buchanan QC told Rusu, 41, at the High Court in Ed­in­burgh: “There is no doubt that this tragic ac­ci­dent oc­curred be­cause you fell asleep at the wheel of your van.”

He also or­dered that Rusu be dis­qual­i­fied from driv­ing for six years and un­til he passes an ex­tended driv­ing test.

Ro­ma­nian Rusu had ear­lier ad­mit­ted caus­ing Mr Ma­jew­ski’s death on April 20.
