Dimi dashes the competition
A Dundee bartender has caused a stir in London after being crowned UK cocktail champion.
Dimi Savvaidis, head of the King of Islington bar on Union Street, is celebrating after winning the UK final of the Monin Cup.
The drink-maker was tasked with creating two cocktails using the French syrup – one alcoholic and one not – which best “told their own story as a bartender”.
Dimi, who has been stirring cocktails professionally since he was 17, won the competition with his cocktails Cliff Diver and King’s Mai Tai.
Having beaten competition from the UK he will now head to Paris for the world final in December.
Dimi said he was “shocked, excited and proud” to have won.
He said: “The heritage and history of Monin along with the philosophy of serving quality consistently is my mantra to my work.”
Dan Davis, ambassador for Monin UK, said: “We’ve seen some exceptional talent at this year’s Monin Cup, with our young UK bartenders pushing the boundaries of flavour combinations and inventive serves.
“The judges were on the lookout for colour, appearance, garnishes, aroma, balance, taste and originality and were extremely impressed by the quality of the entrants this year.
“The judges also awarded marks for showmanship, cleanliness and skills of the bartenders, all of which are a crucial part of serving a cocktail.”
