Citizen of Nowhere art and theatre project comes to Dundee
Three-day-event inspired by prime minister will explore link between modern life and technology
Dundee will play host to a range of weird and wonderful art and theatre projects exploring modern life this weekend.
The Citizen of Nowhere project, which is part of the NEoN festival, is taking place at venues across the city, including Dundee Sheriff Court.
Run by the National Theatre of Scotland and GalinskyWorks, Citizen of Nowhere is inspired by a controversial speech given by Prime Minister Theresa May in which she said: “If you believe you are a citizen of the world, you are a citizen of nowhere. You don’t know what citizenship means.”
The three-day event explores how theatre can work with new technologies and interactive installations and what it means in an era of divisive politics.
Co-curator William Galinsky said: “With new realities like Brexit, Trump, and the resurgence of populism and political strongmen, cultural values like unity, diversity, and empathy are under sustained attack.
“This erosion has gone hand in hand with a disruptive technological revolution which has caused seismic shifts throughout the world, the implications of which we are experiencing in real time today.”
Highlights of the weekend include the installation of a large, transparent pig outside Dundee Railway Station.
Titled Pig, the giant piggy bank asks for contributions from members of the public but states it can only be opened when people agree on how the money should be spent.
Elsewhere in Dundee, there will be a virtual reality playground in the Wellgate Centre and virtual reality theatre performances at Dundee Rep.
Dundee Sheriff Court will be turned into an interactive theatre for performances of The Justice Syndicate.
Audience members will be asked to take on the role of a jury in a case involving a top surgeon accused of a serious crime.
Another play, Hello Hi There, will not feature any human actors at all. Instead, the performance in The Vision Building, is performed by two laptop computers.
Tickets for all of the weekend’s events can be booked at www. nationaltheatrescotland.com/ production/citizen-of-nowhere
