Heavy loss leaves Campbell ‘angry and disappointed’

-

Clyde 5 ArbroAth 0

Arbroath were knocked out of the Scottish Cup on a night to forget as Clyde benefited from two penalty decisions in a 5-0 success.

Lichties boss Dick Campbell was an angry man afterwards.

While he said a 5-0 defeat could never be defended, he believed Clyde “must have thought all their Christmases had come at once”.

“At the first penalty no one in the ground was looking for a penalty and the ball was going high over the bar,” he said.

“They scored a good goal when we gave away a silly foul, but the second penalty was a foul to us in the build-up.

“We did not help ourselves. However, a lot went against us and I am angry and disappointed.”

Clyde scored in 14 minutes. Ricky Little barged Gormley over when Miller curled in a free-kick, and MacDonald despatched the resultant spot-kick in ferocious style.

Barry Ferguson’s side doubled their lead seven minutes later when Scott McLaughlin showed his prowess with a dead ball as he curled home from 22 yards.

Steven Doris had Arbroath’s first chance on 37 minutes. He twisted away from Ross Perry, but the defender diverted his effort.

Just before the half-time whistle Clyde were awarded a second penalty when Gormley fell as he chased a loose ball with Colin Hamilton in close attendance.

MacDonald despatched his effort low past Gomes with ease.

With the tie well in their grasp, Clyde midfielder Miller looked to have committed a major act of folly on 53 minutes when he went head to head with Jassem Sukar on the touchline.

However, both players were only yellow carded.

Barry Ferguson withdrew him shortly afterwards but replacement Matty Flynn was shown a straight red card midway through the half for a lunge at Hamilton.

The 10 men were not put off by Flynn’s dismissal and added a fourth with 18 minutes left when Gormley combined with substitute Scott Ferguson before shooting high into the net from 18 yards.

Ferguson’s side ended in style with Gormley thumping home from 25 yards.

Clyde goalkeeper John Gibson made a fine injury time stop to keep out a Bryan Prunty header. TEAMS Clyde: Gibson, McNeil, McNiff, Smith, Perry, Miller (Flynn 55), Linton (K Ferguson 90), McLaughlin, Gormley, Higgins (S Ferguson 71), MacDonald. Unused substitutes: Caddis, Flynn, Davidson.
