St Andrews was the place to be for top sporting action yesterday as the town hosted its annual Highland games.

Hundreds of spectators descended on Station Park for the 33rd hosting of the event, with athletes competing in traditional running races, cycling and heavy events.

Against the backdrop of the Old Course Hotel, piping and Highland dancing events also took place, along with a tug o’ war.

The event was officially opened by the City of St Andrews Pipe Band, while international tourists were also welcomed to the event with the hosting of an overseas visitors’ race.
