Prestigious fellowship awarded
St Andrews Rotary Club is now home to 14 people who have been awarded the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship following this month’s induction of Rotarian Walter Hill.
The fellowship is one of the highest awards for service in Rotary International. It takes the name of the man who founded Rotary, in Chicago, in 1906 and is awarded under the auspices of the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.
The citation states that the Paul Harris Fellowship is given “in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world” – and Mr Hill was deemed a more than worthy recipient. During his 30 years in Rotary, he has chaired four Rotary committees, including both foundation and international.
In his current role as convener of the ways and means committee, he has led a team of committed people who have raised £60,000 in the past five years.
President Gordon Wowk congratulated the new fellow during a short induction ceremony and expressed the club’s appreciation for his work for the club and the community it serves.
Each year the St Andrews club supports 30 individuals, organisations and charities locally, nationally and around the world.
Paul Harris Fellowships are typically awarded to people who have contributed significant sums to various Rotary Foundation funds, while individual clubs may from time to time choose to honour individuals.
