Golf gets even faster

Volkswagen has made the Golf R hot hatch even speedier.

For £2,300 on top of the car’s £32,710 price tag, you can bolt on the Performance Pack.

This removes the speed limiter, letting the car get to 166mph (oddly, the estate will do 168mph).

You also get better brakes, bigger wheels and – on the hatchback – a small rear spoiler.

Those brakes are dubbed ‘R-Performance’, and shave 2kg from the braking system’s weight. Elsewhere, the 18in standard-fit ‘Cadiz’ alloys are shelved in favour of 19in ‘Spielberg’ alloys.

If you’re ordering a Golf R hatchback, for £2,975 you can now specify a new sports exhaust package developed by specialist Akrapovic. Made from titanium, it features round tips in place of the standard car’s oval items.
