“All RN Air Stations were called after birds – RNAS Arbroath was HMS Condor and RNAS Lossiemouth was HMS Fulmar. I served at the latter in the WRNS from 1953-54 and 1955-57.
“My first flight was in a Vampire jet trainer and I flew in a number of other RN aircraft including helicopters.
“All RN shore stations were named as ships ‘HMS’ – Rosyth Dockyard was HMS Caledonia – and personnel were referred to as ‘going ashore’ as from a ship.”
