A meeting was held in Arbroath YMCA Hall last night, at which a proposal to establish a social centre in the town was considered. Mr J.S. Nicoll, president of the Arbroath YMCA, presided and said that the YMCA directors felt there was room for a social centre in which they could incorporate all the young life of the town. Mr H. Lightbody, hon. general secretary of the YMCA for Scotland spoke of the national policy in providing red triangle clubs for discharged men and for work amongst boys.

The railways are all threatened with widespread disruption and the cancellation of all Sunday trains by decisions reached yesterday by two unions. After considering the recent pay award of the industry’s arbitration body, the Railway Staffs National Tribunal, the executive of the National Union of Railwaymen, by 12 votes to 11, rejected the tribunal’s findings. They decided to call on members to work only a standard 40-hour week, not to work on Sundays and also to work to rule.

The sun came out to welcome the luxury liner QE2 on her first-ever visit to the River Forth yesterday. The ship emerged from the earlymorning mist which shrouded the Forth, arriving alongside the BP Hound Point terminal – one mile east of the Forth Road Bridge – at 10am. The visit was plain sailing all the way – except, perhaps, for anyone wishing to drive along the coast roads on both sides of the river. More than 1,400 passengers made use of the Forth call to visit the Edinburgh area.

The wraps have come off five striking designs for Perth City Hall. Leading architects from across Europe have submitted their visions for the city centre venue. The hall, which has stood vacant for 12 years, is being transformed into a visual arts venue which may become home to the Stone of Destiny. Council bosses say the £20 million project is vital for a region they say is lacking an attraction capable of bringing in more than 100,000 people a year. The public is being urged to have its say.
