Why all the gloom?

The Courier & Advertiser (Fife Edition) - - COMMENT -

“I watch television news, especially from the BBC, with my finger on the mute button,” writes a Craigie regular.

“It’s all doom and gloom. Sunny weather? We shall all perish in a burnedout planet unless we stop using fossil fuels and throwing plastic away. NHS? It’s the worst health service in the world, if television newscasters are to be believed.

“Law and order and our prison system? We have lost control. Education? Our schools have gone down the tubes. Illegal drugs? The police and our prisons just cannot cope.

“Obesity? Our roads? Our defences? You name it. One or other or several of the above subjects come up every day with mournful-voiced commentators making us reach for our hankies. What we need is a new channel broadcasting only good, bright and cheerful news.”
