- RICHARD BURDGE

For many, the enduring image of the floods that hit Alyth was a car that had been swept through the town and left on the bonnet of another vehicle.

Evidence of the power of the natural disaster was left throughout the town centre, forcing people from their homes and threatening to destroy their livelihoods.

In the months that followed, the remarkable resilience of the community came to the fore again and again as they fought to recover from the damage left in the wake of the flooding.

Neighbour helped neighbour and slowly the town’s homes and businesses returned to normal.

The replacement of the two footbridges swept away in the deluge is hugely significant to local people as it helps to draw a line under the trauma that they faced.

With the completion of the new bridges, the townspeople can finally put the events of July 2015 behind them while never forgetting the havoc that nature can inflict.
