Kirkcaldy march on with bonus-point win

-

After last week’s virtual wipe out, Dundee High Rugby were idle with the rescheduled fixtures leaving them and league leaders Edinburgh Accies as the only BT National League Division 1 sides without a game.

In BT National Division 2 the Kirkcaldy bandwagon rolled on to Glasgow, with a bonus-point win against GHK for the second time this season. Their 38-17 victory was even more convincing than the 38-32 success at Beveridge Park in September.

Kirkcaldy led 21-10 at the break and almost doubled the tally into the second half with tries from Josh Laird, Gav MacKenzie, a Steve Mitchell double, Ian Harvey and Rhys Bonner. Finlay Smith added four out of six conversions.

GHK’s David Campbell had 12 of the home side’s 17 points, with Scott Taylor nicking the other try, but they never got themselves into a position to pose a real threat.

Kirkcaldy now lead National 2 by 11 points from Hamilton so the title is theirs to throw away, an outcome that would seem unlikely.

A big challenge presents itself at Beveridge Park next up, however, with Peebles the opposition.

The Gytes men will be in confident mood. They dealt a massive blow to Lasswade’s promotion challenge with a crushing win at home on Saturday.

With enough games in hand to make them outside contenders, they will be a handful.

For the second time this season, Howe of Fife lost to Biggar.

Unlike the Duffus Park encounter, Howe didn’t manage a single point. They came within four points of the Hartree Mill outfit at home, losing 24-20, but this time Biggar ran in 29 points without reply.

There will be no real concerns at Howe about dropping into the relegation zone but, in eighth spot in the table with seven games to play, they will still want to get some decent results in the frame.

Despite being 21-12 down at halftime, Perthshire salvaged a losing bonus point at Gordonians in their BT National 3 clash. Indeed, they won the second half.

Tries from Ryan Miller, Dan Bowater and Jamie Munro – with Graeme Clow landing two conversions – ensured that Shire brought something back from Aberdeen. Although 18 points behind eighth-placed Hill head Jordan hill, they are eight ahead of Orkney in 10th spot.

It will be a big ask of Shire to collect anything from next Saturday’s encounter, their opponents being league leaders Glasgow Accies.
