“On May 8 I will be at Poperinghe New Military Cemetery to visit the grave of my great uncle Robert Raeburn,” writes Christine Johnston.

“I have been before but especially wanted to visit this year as it will be 100 years since he died on May 8 1918 serving in the Great War. He was a gunner in the 249th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.

“He had been a baker in Dundee living in Crescent Lane. His father chose the inscription ‘Deeply Mourned’ for his headstone. His brother, George Raeburn, my grandfather, another baker living in South Baffin Street, served with the Gordon Highlanders. He was wounded by shrapnel and gas but fortunately came back to Dundee.

“Sadly he died quite young, at the age of 56, and is buried in the family plot in Eastern Cemetery. His brother Robert is also remembered on the family headstone.”
