Hundreds of English football fans were arrested in Rotterdam in the run-up to last night’s World Cup match with Holland. Although the game, which England lost 2-0, appeared to pass off peacefully, the match was marred by days of street violence. Scotland, too, tasted defeat by losing 3-1 to Italy in Rome, but no trouble was reported. The scale of the trouble in Holland was emphasised when 20 fans escaped from an army barracks where they were being held before being deported.
