An­kle rules Wood out of Lions

MARK Wood’s re­turn to com­pet­i­tive ac­tion fol­low­ing an op­er­a­tion on his an­kle has been de­layed, with him hav­ing been with­drawn from the Eng­land Lions squad.

Wood was due to join the Lions for their one-day series against Sri Lanka A next month but he will now re­vert to the orig­i­nal plan of re­turn­ing to ac­tion for the North-South series later in March.

Wood re­cently re­turned from Eng­land cricket’s Pace Pro­gramme train­ing camp at Potchef­stroom in South Africa, where he stepped up his re­turn to bowl­ing af­ter surgery on his left an­kle last au­tumn.

Hav­ing spo­ken to the Pace Pro­gramme coaches and med­i­cal staff, it has been agreed that the bowler would ben­e­fit from spend­ing three more weeks train­ing at home be­fore trav­el­ling to Dubai for the North-South series.

There are no plans for Wood to be re­placed in the Lions squad for the five-match series against Sri Lanka A, which be­gins on March 2.
